Kano Local Govt Elections: Opposition parties, including APC, boycott verification exercise over contentious N9m & N4m nomination fees.
The Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) commenced verification of credentials for local government election candidates on Wednesday, but opposition party candidates were noticeably absent.
According to KANSIEC's timetable, the verification exercise will run until Monday, paving the way for the October 26 elections.
On Wednesday, chairmanship candidates from Kano Central Senatorial District's 15 local government areas underwent screening, alongside councillorship candidates from seven LGAs within the same district.
Only candidates from the ruling New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP) showed up for the verification exercise at the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) office on Wednesday. Opposition parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC), were noticeably absent, having not purchased the required nomination forms.
The APC's absence comes as no surprise, given their ongoing legal challenge against KANSIEC's nomination fees - N9 million for chairmanship candidates and N4 million for councillorship candidates. The party has taken their grievances to court, seeking to stop the elections.
Despite the APC's efforts, a Federal High Court in Kano has rejected their application to halt the local government elections, scheduled for October 26. Additionally, a State High Court has issued a restraining order against the APC, PDP, and 19 other parties, preventing them from obstructing KANSIEC's collection of nomination fees.
