President Tinubu directs conversion of filling stations to CNG outlets nationwide. Vehicle owners can switch to cleaner, cheaper energy with conversion kits.

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperipke Ekpo, has announced President Bola Tinubu's plan to convert filling stations into Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) outlets. This revelation came after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on October 24, chaired by President Tinubu.

Ekpo stated that President Tinubu's directive on the CNG transition was communicated through the Minister of Information during the meeting. “We are well aware that the president set up a presidential committee on the CNG to drive the CNG project,” Ekpo emphasized, highlighting the government's commitment to this initiative

As the Minister of State for Gas Resources, Ekpo is responsible for implementing policies aimed at making Nigeria a gas-based country. His focus areas include promoting industrialization, power generation and distribution, clean cooking, and auto-use reliant on gas.

Objectives of the CNG Transition:

Enhance Domestic Gas Penetration: Increase the use of CNG and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) for the betterment of the nation

Promote Industrialization: Leverage gas resources to drive economic growth

Clean Energy: Encourage the adoption of environmentally friendly energy sources

This development is part of President Tinubu's broader energy agenda, which includes expanding Nigeria's gas resources and reducing dependence on oil. With Ekpo at the helm, Nigeria is poised to embark on a significant energy transformation journey.

“As a minister who has been supervising what has been going on there, it is left for us to inform the general public that CNG has come to stay, and we have to follow that route because CNG is safe, cheaper, and protects the environment,” Ekpo said.

President Bola Tinubu has directed the conversion of most filling stations across Nigeria into Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) outlets. This move aims to provide a cleaner, cheaper energy alternative, with conversion kits available to enable vehicle owners to switch their cars to run on CNG. The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperipke Ekpo, announced this directive after the Federal Executive Council meeting, emphasizing that CNG is safe, cheaper, and protects the environment.

According to Ekpo, the president wants to ensure that most filling stations nationwide are converted into CNG stations, equipped with conversion kits, allowing vehicle owners to switch to CNG. This initiative is expected to reduce fuel costs, with a litre of fuel that currently costs N1,000, available for N200 with CNG. The goal is to drive the CNG program to reach all parts of the country, leveraging Nigeria's natural gas resources.

“It is important to note that when you are using CNG, you save a lot of money. A litre of fuel that can go for N1000, with CNG, you get it at N200, which saves you N800,” Ekpo said.

President Bola Tinubu recently announced that Nigerians now have the option to choose between purchasing premium motor spirit (PMS), also known as petrol, at N1,000 per liter or opting for Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) at a significantly lower rate of N200 per standard cubic meter, starting October 22. This move is part of the government's efforts to provide alternative energy sources and reduce the financial burden on citizens.

In his Independence Day speech on October 1, President Tinubu emphasized his administration's commitment to finding sustainable solutions to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians, particularly with regards to rising living costs. The introduction of CNG as an alternative to petrol is expected to make transportation more affordable and contribute to the country's economic growth.
