Fake fertility nurse Blessing Amaka David-Agwa faces 45-count charges for defrauding 45 women. EFCC opposes bail citing victims' mental health impact.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Enugu Zonal Directorate has prosecuted Blessing Amaka David-Agwa, a self-proclaimed fertility nurse, for scamming 45 women. She promised to help them conceive but instead defrauded them.
David-Agwa faced Justice Mohammed Garba Umar at the Federal High Court in Enugu State's Independence Layout. The judge heard 45 counts of fraudulent impersonation, forgery, and false pretense totaling N28,278,600.
The fake fertility nurse's alleged crimes involved:
- Impersonating a medical professional
- Forging documents to deceive victims
- Obtaining money under false pretenses
The EFCC's action demonstrates its commitment to protecting Nigerians from fraudulent activities.
Blessing Amaka David-Agwa's troubles began on August 28, 2024, when the NDLEA handed her over to the EFCC's Enugu Zonal Directorate. She was accused of posing as a medical fertility nurse, scamming unsuspecting victims.
Investigations revealed David-Agwa allegedly forged certificates from the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. She used these fake credentials to claim expertise in helping women conceive easily.
Her false claims duped over 45 innocent women, leading to her prosecution.
Count 41 of the charge reads, “That you, Blessing Amaka David-Agwa sometime in 2024 in Enugu, within the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court of Nigeria with intent to defraud, did obtain the total sum of N1,600.000 million from one Okenwa Joy Chiamaka, under the pretence of being a Medical Fertility Nurse (Specially trained to assist women get pregnant with ease) which pretext you knew to be false and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 1 (1) (a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006 and punishable under Section 1 (3) of the same Act.”
Blessing Amaka David-Agwa entered a “not guilty” plea to all 45 counts levelled against her.
In response, EFCC counsel Blessing N. Obasi requested a trial date and asked the court to remand David-Agwa at the Enugu State Correctional Facility.
However, defense counsel G. C. Madubuegwu brought to the court's attention a pending motion on notice for bail, dated and filed on October 4, 2024.
He stated, “It is brought pursuant to Section 162 and 165(1) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act.”
The defense's bail motion now awaits the court's consideration.
The defense counsel, G. C. Madubuegwu, urged the court to grant Blessing Amaka David-Agwa bail on liberal terms after presenting the bail application. However, EFCC counsel, Blessing N. Obasi, strongly opposed the bail request, emphasizing the severity of the allegations and the devastating impact on the victims' mental health.
Justice Mohammed Garba Umar carefully considered both sides' arguments before adjourning the case until November 12, 2024, for a ruling on the bail application. In the meantime, David-Agwa will remain at the Enugu State Correctional Facility.
This development comes after David-Agwa pleaded not guilty to 45 counts of fraudulent impersonation, forgery, and obtaining money under false pretenses, allegedly scamming 45 women of N28.2 million.
