Newcastle United secured a spot in the Carabao Cup last 16 with a 1-0 victory over AFC Wimbledon at St James' Park. Fabian Schar's penalty, awarded after Miguel Almiron was fouled by Joe Pigott, sealed the win.

Referee Darren Bond consulted with his assistant before awarding the spot-kick on the stroke of halftime. Schar calmly converted the penalty beyond Owen Goodman.

Newcastle dominated possession and chances against their League Two opponents. Almiron, Harvey Barnes, and Sean Longstaff all came close, while Wimbledon failed to register a shot on target.

The Magpies will host Chelsea in the fourth round on October 29.
