Cholera outbreak in Plateau: 20 cases confirmed, 2 deaths reported. Authorities urge residents to take precautions as infectious disease spreads. Get the latest updates on the outbreak, prevention measures, and response efforts.
Plateau State's Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cletus Shurkuk, disclosed on Friday in Jos that the state has confirmed 20 cholera cases, unfortunately resulting in two fatalities. The affected individuals reside in Kwalmiya community, Kanam Local Government Area. Fortunately, 16 patients have already received treatment and been discharged, while the remaining two are responding well to treatment and are expected to be discharged soon.
According to Dr. Shurkuk, the Ministry of Health has implemented robust epidemiological surveillance systems to monitor cholera cases and educate the community on effective prevention methods. This proactive approach aims to curb the spread of the disease and ensure the well-being of Plateau State residents.
Shurkuk highlighted the community's vulnerability due to its reliance on a single functional well, supplemented by two inactive boreholes. Fortunately, his ministry has partnered with local authorities to restore the non-functional solar-powered boreholes.
According to Shurkuk, cholera is a severe diarrheal illness triggered by consuming food or water contaminated with Vibrio cholerae bacteria, emphasizing the importance of access to safe and clean water sources in preventing the spread of this waterborne disease.
“It's a disease of poverty affecting people with inadequate access to safe water and basic sanitation,” he explained.
