Bundesliga: Dortmund's Title Hopes Fade with 2-1 Loss to Augsburg
Borussia Dortmund's Bundesliga title ambitions suffer another setback with a 2-1 defeat to Augsburg, leaving them 8th in the table and 7 points behind leaders RB Leipzig.
Borussia Dortmund's Bundesliga title aspirations were dealt a significant blow on Saturday, as they succumbed to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Augsburg.
Dortmund, seeking redemption after their midweek 5-2 Champions League loss to Real Madrid, began promisingly. Donyell Malen coolly slotted home inside the penalty area following a clever exchange with striker Serhou Guirassy, who has now contributed to 10 goals in nine games this season.
However, Dortmund's dominance was short-lived. Their vulnerability when playing out from defense proved costly, as Augsburg capitalized midway through the first half. Alexis Claude-Maurice collected a loose ball and beat Gregor Kobel with a precise low strike from 25 yards.
Despite Dortmund's late pressure, Augsburg secured their first win over BVB in four years. The defeat leaves Dortmund eighth in the table, seven points adrift of leaders RB Leipzig, and still without an away win in the Bundesliga this season.
Marius Wolf's missed opportunity and Almugera Kabar's late red card epitomized Dortmund's frustrating afternoon. Augsburg, meanwhile, climbed to 11th in the table, boosted by their hard-fought victory.
