Presidency Confirms Betta Edu's Exit, Appoints Dr. Nentawe Yilwatda as New Minister Amid Ongoing Corruption Probe
The Nigerian Presidency has officially confirmed that Betta Edu, the former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, will not be rejoining President Bola Tinubu's cabinet. Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga made this announcement on Sunday, October 28, putting an end to months of speculation about her potential reinstatement.
Edu's suspension in January was prompted by a nationwide outcry over a reported ₦585 million scandal. President Tinubu launched an extensive investigation into alleged fraud within her ministry, promising decisive action against anyone found responsible. Onanuga has now confirmed that the matter involving Edu is concluded.
Dr. Nentawe Yilwatda, a former Plateau State governorship candidate, has been appointed to permanently fill Edu's position. This development brings closure to the uncertainty surrounding Edu's status. Yilwatda's appointment is part of President Tinubu's cabinet reshuffle, which has seen other changes, including the appointment of Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs.
He stated, “I think there is another person from Cross River in the cabinet. Betta Edu is gone. Don't forget that she was suspended in January, and this is October.
“No, she is gone. Her position has been taken over by someone else - that's the man from Plateau (Nentawe) who is now assuming the role. For this government, there is no place for her in the cabinet.”
“The EFCC has not shared whatever they have, but if you consider the president's action, it suggests that the EFCC may have submitted something that justified the president's decision,” Onanuga noted.
