Awka, Anambra State, Nigeria: Shooting Spree Leaves Multiple Dead, Police Launch Investigation



A shooting spree erupted in Awka, the Anambra State capital, on Thursday, October 24, resulting in multiple fatalities. According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred at Ifite Awka, near the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, at approximately 9:15 a.m.


Eyewitnesses describe a chaotic scene in Ifite, Awka, after a shooting incident. “Gunmen just shot a guy a few minutes ago... He's lying lifeless,” one witness reported.


A lecturer who witnessed the aftermath stated, “I saw seven lifeless bodies in the area. I had to abandon my lectures and turn back while en route to school.” The actual number of victims remains unclear.


The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the incident. Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, said, “A police responding team has taken over the scene, and further details will be communicated shortly.”


Ikenga added that the command had intercepted videos and voice notes indicating plans to unleash violence on Awka. “We are investigating these threats and working to prevent further incidents,” he stated.


The police urge anyone with information to come forward as they work to determine the motive behind the shooting and ensure public safety.


He said, “Anambra State Police Command begins investigation on some intercepted videos and voice notes on social media space threatening violence in the state.


“The Police Command not taking those clips for granted and saddled with the responsibility of maintaining law and order shall live up to its mandate of ensuring that no person or group of persons is allowed to infringe on the fundamental human rights of others.


“Given the above, Police and Other Security Forces have intensified patrols, and improved security dominance and surveillance to enforce the law, maintain Public Order, Public Safety and other Support Services in the State.”
