A Russian man's incredible survival story has emerged after being rescued from the Pacific Ocean. The 46-year-old had been adrift for an astonishing 67 days since August 9, when his small boat lost its course in the northwestern Pacific.
Unfortunately, his brother, 49, and nephew, 15, didn't survive the ordeal.
The survivor was spotted aboard a catamaran-style sailboat, looking gaunt and bearded, wearing a hooded jacket and an orange life vest. A red flag on a short pole was also visible, likely signaling distress. Fishermen near the village of Ust-Khayruzovo, along the Kamchatka Peninsula, made the chance discovery.
The ill-fated journey began on August 9, when two men, accompanied by one of their sons, departed from a cape in Khabarovsk Krai, aiming for the town of Okha on Sakhalin Island, Russia. However, the boat veered drastically off course and was found approximately 1,000 km (621 miles) from its intended destination.
The survivor was hospitalized in serious condition, while authorities have yet to publicly identify the travelers. An investigation is likely to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragic events.
