Investigation underway after 10-year-old Nomvelo Mqhele dies by suicide in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, highlighting concerns around child mental health and safety.

A devastating incident occurred in Pumula, South suburb of Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, on Friday, October 11, where 10-year-old Nomvelo Phumuzile Mqhele took her own life at her uncle's residence. This heartbreaking event coincided with World Mental Health Day, raising concerns about child safety and mental health issues.

Nomvelo was left in her uncle's care, along with a two-year-old child. Upon her uncle's return home, he discovered Nomvelo's body hanging from a roof truss, while the toddler was crying in the same room. According to Bulawayo's deputy police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, Nomvelo allegedly used an old rope, a plastic chair, and a 20-liter container to gain the necessary height.

This incident highlights the importance of addressing mental health issues, particularly among children. It's crucial for families, communities, and authorities to work together to ensure child safety and provide support for those struggling with mental health concerns.

Following the discovery of Nomvelo's body, neighbors were promptly notified, and her mother was contacted immediately. Local authorities conducted a preliminary investigation at the scene, finding no visible injuries on the 10-year-old's body and no suicide note.

The Bulawayo Police Department has launched an ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding Nomvelo's tragic death. As part of their response, authorities are urging parents and guardians to be vigilant and maintain open communication with their children. This includes being aware of potential signs of distress and addressing any issues promptly to prevent similar incidents.
