Tragedy strikes near University of Benin as building collapse traps students, injures many; rescue efforts underway, university yet to confirm casualty numbers.
A devastating building collapse has trapped several University of Benin (UNIBEN) students under the rubble. According to the institution's Public Relations Officer, Benedicta Ehanire, the off-campus residential building gave way after a heavy downpour.
The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday on Ekhator Street, Ekosodin, a neighborhood largely inhabited by UNIBEN students. The collapse has raised concerns about the safety and well-being of the students trapped under the debris.
The collapsed building is located in Ekosodin, a neighborhood adjacent to the University of Benin campus. Emergency responders have swiftly deployed a rescue team to extract students trapped beneath the debris.
Rescue efforts are underway to free the trapped students, with reports indicating that multiple students were injured in the collapse. Sources confirm that several of the injured have been hospitalized for further medical attention.
This latest incident comes on the heels of a recent disruption to academic activities at UNIBEN, which were suspended in July due to student protests sparked by a prolonged power outage that lasted several weeks on campus.
