Nigerian Senate and House of Representatives postpone resumption from summer break by one week, new date set for September 24, no official reason given.

The Nigerian Senate and House of Representatives have announced a new resumption date of September 24, delaying their return to work by one week from the initial date of September 17.

In separate notices issued on Thursday in Abuja, the Clerk to the Senate, Chinedu Akubueze, and the Spokesman of the House of Representatives, Akin Rotimi, confirmed the postponement.

The National Assembly embarked on its annual recess on July 23, and with the new resumption date, lawmakers will have been on vacation for nearly two months, sparking concerns about the impact on legislative business and governance.

In an internal memo to all Senators, Clerk Chinedu Akubueze announced a change in the resumption date from summer break, stating: “Please note that the resumption date has been rescheduled from September 17, 2024, to September 24, 2024, at 11:00 am.”

Spokesman Akin Rotimi issued a statement confirming that the House of Representatives will resume from its annual recess on September 24, 2024, at 11:00 am, aligning with the new resumption date announced by the Senate.

“This follows a rescheduling from the original date of September 17, 2024, as communicated to Honourable Members via an internal memo by the Clerk of the House, Dr. Yahaya Danzaria, on Wednesday, on the directive of the House Leadership.”

The reason behind the one-week delay in resumption has not been officially disclosed, leaving the motivation for the extension unclear.
