Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has officially kicked off the N41 billion upgrade of the Ibadan Airport, now renamed Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport, aiming to transform Ibadan into a regional business hub in Nigeria's South-West. This ambitious project, planned since 2019, is expected to be completed within 12 months.

Upgrade Details:

Cost: N41 billion

Expected Completion: 12 months

Airport Name: Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport

Goal: Transform Ibadan into a regional business hub

The groundbreaking ceremony took place on September 18, 2024, at the airport premises, with Governor Makinde joined by Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, and other dignitaries. This upgrade is part of Makinde's vision to position Oyo State as a leader in economic development, leveraging the airport's strategic location as a nodal city and major entry point to Northern Nigeria.

“Our focus is on fighting poverty, not the poor. While it is true that times are tough, this project represents a significant investment in our future,“ the governor said.

The governor explained that the initiative would enhance transportation and attract businesses, tourists, and investors to the region.

“Modernising the airport is essential for connecting the state to the global economy and facilitating economic activities.

“The upgrade of the SLA Airport, which will cost N41 billion, is expected to enhance air travel operations and provide a reliable transportation network for both business and leisure travellers, positioning the state for economic growth and development.”

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has commended Governor Seyi Makinde for his commitment to development projects in Oyo State, particularly the upgrade of the Ibadan Airport to international standards. Adeleke expressed his admiration for Makinde's vision and passion for development, highlighting his own administration's efforts to revive and complete the MKO Abiola Airport in Osun State, which has been stalled for almost 12 years.

Adeleke emphasized the importance of regional cooperation, pledging to collaborate with neighboring states to explore mutually beneficial opportunities. He also revealed plans to upgrade the Osun Airport project to include a cargo terminal and free trade zone under a public-private partnership arrangement.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, represented by Francis Balogun, acting manager of SLA Airport, expressed optimism about the project's potential to stimulate Oyo State's economy. Governor Makinde described the upgrade as a “strategic investment” that will be delivered on time and within budget, with the first phase costing N41 billion. The project is expected to take 12 months to complete and will involve technical expansion of facilities in the second phase.
