Corruption scandal rocks Nigerian Correctional Service: Bobrisky's reduced sentence sparks probe into bribery, official collusion.
Bobrisky, a social media influencer, was convicted in April for abusing naira notes and sentenced to six months in prison. However, a prison official revealed that Bobrisky only spent three weeks at Kirikiri Prison before being released, with an official release date in August.
In a shocking twist, activist Martins Vincent Otse (aka VeryDarkMan) released an audio recording on September 24, allegedly featuring Bobrisky admitting to serving his prison term outside prison walls. The recording also claims Bobrisky paid N15 million to have money laundering charges dropped by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The controversy surrounding Bobrisky's prison sentence has sparked concerns about corruption within the Nigerian Correctional Service. Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has ordered a thorough investigation into allegations of bribery and corruption, emphasizing that any form of misconduct or bribery will not be tolerated.
The allegations took a surprising turn when Bobrisky claimed in a voice note that his godfather, in collaboration with the Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, arranged for him to serve his sentence in a private apartment for N10 million. Additionally, Bobrisky alleged that he paid N15 million to officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to have money laundering charges dropped.
In response to the allegations, four senior officers of the Nigerian Correctional Service have been suspended, including Michael Anugwa, deputy controller of corrections, and Sikiru Adekunle, also a DCC overseeing the Maximum-Security Custodial Centre
The investigation, led by Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary, aims to uncover the truth behind these allegations and ensure that justice is served
The official revealed:

The money he said he paid is actually true, no lies. Yes, he paid the money. The revelations align with a 2019 undercover operation in which he deliberately allowed himself to be detained for five days by the police and incarcerated for eight days by the prison service.During this time, he discovered that it was possible to pay for well-furnished apartments within prisons, smuggle in phones, drugs, and other prohibited items, have one's name removed from prison records, and even live outside while supposedly serving a jail term.
