The city of Paris will honor the memory of Ugandan Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptegei, who was tragically murdered by her boyfriend in Kenya. To pay tribute, the Paris Mayor has announced plans to name a sports venue after Cheptegei, ensuring her legacy lives on and symbolizing the Olympic and Paralympic values of equality.

Rebecca Cheptegei, a talented marathon runner, represented Uganda at the Paris Olympics, competing in the women's marathon event. Her life was brutally cut short when her partner doused her with petrol and set her on fire at her home in Endebess, Trans-Nzoia County, Kenya, leaving the international community in shock.

Kenyan authorities reported that Cheptegei's partner used petrol to set her alight, resulting in her tragic death. The incident has sent shockwaves globally, with many paying tribute to the young athlete's memory. The Paris Mayor's decision to name a sports venue after Cheptegei serves as a fitting tribute to her life and athletic achievements.

Ugandan athletics officials waited four days to confirm Cheptegei's death after she suffered severe burns in a fatal attack.

“Paris will not forget her. We'll dedicate a sports venue to her so that her memory and her story remain among us and help carry the message of equality, which is a message carried by the Olympic and Paralympic Games,” Paris Mayor said.

“She dazzled us here in Paris. We saw her. Her beauty, her strength, her freedom, and it was in all likelihood her beauty, strength, and freedom that were intolerable for the person who committed this murder,” she added.

Rebecca Cheptegei, a 33-year-old Ugandan athlete, made her Olympic debut at the Paris Games, competing in the women's marathon and finishing 44th. Her promising athletic career was tragically cut short.

According to police and medical reports, Cheptegei suffered severe injuries after being brutally attacked by her Kenyan partner, Dickson Ndiema Marangach, in front of her children on Sunday. The vicious assault left her with 80% burns, a devastating outcome.
