Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Joe Ajaero, arrested by DSS at Abuja airport, sparks outrage. NLC demands unconditional release, threatening action if deadline is missed.


 


The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) disclosed that its President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, was arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) on Monday, September 9, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport in Abuja.


Ajaero was about to board a flight to the United Kingdom (UK) for an official engagement with the Trade Union Congress (TUC) when he was taken into custody. The NLC condemned the arrest, stating, ”The assault on Nigerian workers continues.”


According to the NLC, Ajaero is currently being detained at the office of the National Security Adviser (NSA). The organization demanded his immediate release, criticizing the DSS for its actions.


“The assault on Nigerian workers continues. President of the NLC, Comrade Joe Ajaero, was arrested and abducted by men of the DSS at the Nnamdi Azikwe Airport Abuja this morning on his way to attend an official engagement of Trade Union Congress (TUC) United Kingdom and he is now detained at the office of the National Security Adviser (NSA),” the NLC said in a statement.


“This intimidation and assault must stop!!!”


In a brief update on X on Tuesday, September 10, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) announced that its President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, has been released from detention.


“Breaking new, Comrade Joe Ajaero released from DSS detention. The struggle continues, we can't be silenced,” the statement reads.


On Monday, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) urged the Department of State Services (DSS) to unconditionally release its President, Comrade Joe Ajaero.


Following an emergency meeting in Abuja, the NLC's National Administrative Council (NAC) issued a communiqué demanding Ajaero's immediate release, stating he should be freed before midnight.
