Labour Party crisis deepens as Abure-led NWC rejects caretaker committee, revokes automatic tickets for Peter Obi and Alex Otti, and files lawsuit against INEC to affirm legitimacy.
The Labour Party's internal crisis has intensified, with the Julius Abure-led National Working Committee (NWC) taking legal action against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The lawsuit aims to prevent INEC from recognizing a new caretaker committee led by Nenadi Usman.
According to source, it disclosed that Abure is seeking a court order to compel INEC to recognize his leadership, based on the March 27 convention that reinstated him and his team.
Obiora Ifoh, the party's National Publicity Secretary, confirmed that the NWC has indeed taken legal action, as the leadership crisis within the Labour Party continues to unfold.
Following his return from China, Labour Party's National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, clarified that the lawsuit is not directly targeting the caretaker committee, as the party does not recognize its legitimacy. Rather, the primary objective is to compel INEC to acknowledge and respect the existing leadership, as established by the March 27 convention.
Umar Farouk, the party's National Secretary, echoed Ifoh's sentiments, emphasizing the need to affirm the legitimacy of the Abure-led NWC. He stressed that this is crucial for the party's stability and continuity.
The legal action comes on the heels of the formation of the Nenadi Usman-led caretaker committee, which was backed by key party figures, including 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi and Abia State Governor Alex Otti. This move has sparked a leadership crisis within the party.
A 29-member caretaker committee, led by Nenadi Usman, was established to oversee elections and facilitate the transition to new party executives at various levels. However, the Abure-led National Working Committee (NWC) dismissed the committee as illegal and refused to recognize its authority.
The Abure-led faction further escalated the situation by revoking the automatic 2027 election tickets previously granted to Peter Obi and Alex Otti. The NWC defended this move as a measure to ensure fairness and transparency in candidate selection, rather than an act of retaliation against the duo. This decision has heightened tensions within the party.
