FG Urges Caution for Nigerian Travellers to UK

Nigerians cautioned over UK violence..

Nigeria issues travel advisory for citizens visiting UK amid violent protests and misinformation, urging caution and avoidance of crowded areas and political events following deadly knife attack in Southport.

The Nigerian government has issued a travel advisory to its citizens planning to visit the United Kingdom, urging them to exercise caution due to the recent outbreak of violence. This warning comes after a tragic incident where three young girls were killed at a concert.

The advisory, issued by Ambassador Eche Abu-Ode, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on Monday, August 5, highlights the risk of violent protests in various parts of Britain. These protests were sparked by a deadly knife attack at a children's dance class in Southport, northwest England, which left three girls dead and 10 others injured a week ago.

Misinformation spread by anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim groups falsely claimed the attacker was an immigrant and a radical Islamist. However, authorities have clarified that the suspect is a British-born individual, and the incident is not being treated as a terrorist act.

In response to the situation, the government has advised Nigerian citizens in the UK to exercise caution by avoiding political events, protests, rallies, and marches. Additionally, they should steer clear of crowded areas and large gatherings, and remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings at all times to ensure their safety.

The statement read in part, “There is an increased risk of violence and disorder occasioned by the recent riots in the UK, stemming from the killing of three young girls at a concert.

“The violence has assumed dangerous proportions as evidenced by reported attacks on Law enforcement agents and damage to infrastructure.

“To this end, citizens are advised to be extra vigilant and take measures as follows: Avoid political processions and protests, rallies or marches. Avoid crowded areas and large gatherings. Be vigilant and self-aware at all times.”

The ministry encouraged citizens to contact the Nigerian High Commission in the UK for relevant information via email (hc@nigeriahc.org.uk) or phone (+442078391244).
