Favour Ofili secured a spot in the 200m final with a season-best time of 22.05s, finishing second behind Julien Alfred, who took the top spot in the first semi-final with a blistering 21.98s on Monday.
Nigerian sprinter Favour Ofili has made history by qualifying for the women's 200m final at the Paris Olympic Games, cementing her place among the world's elite athletes.
Ofili's impressive performance in the semi-final on Monday saw her finish second with a season-best time of 22.05s, just behind winner Julien Alfred's 21.98s. This achievement marks a significant milestone for Nigerian athletics, as Favour Ofili becomes the first athlete since Mary Onyali to reach the 200m final at the Olympics.
Mary Onyali's legacy continues to inspire, as she remains the only Nigerian athlete to have achieved a podium finish in the 200m event, setting a high standard for future generations to strive for.
Udodi Onwuzurike has been given a second opportunity to make history, as he aims to become the fourth Nigerian male athlete to advance to the semifinals of the 200m event at the Olympics.
Udodi Onwuzurike will get a second chance to advance in the men's 200m event after finishing fifth in his heat with a time of 20.55s, sending him to the Repechage Round for another shot at reaching the semifinals.
Notably, Onwuzurike is attempting to follow in the footsteps of Divine Oduduru, who made it to the semifinals in both 2016 and 2021, but fell short of reaching the final. If successful, Onwuzurike will become the fourth Nigerian man to reach the 200m semifinals at the Olympics.
