RMAFC Chairman, Muhammed Bello Shehu, addressed the controversy surrounding National Assembly members' compensation on Tuesday, August 13, revealing that each Senator receives a total monthly package of N1,063,860. This disclosure aims to clarify the debate sparked by former President Olusegun Obasanjo's claim that federal lawmakers unlawfully set their own salaries and allowances.
Shehu's statement also follows former Senator Shehu Sani's assertion that Senators receive a monthly running cost of N13.5 million, in addition to the N750,000 monthly allowance prescribed by the commission. The RMAFC Chairman's revelation sheds light on the actual compensation of National Assembly members, dispelling speculation and misinformation.
Shehu explained that Senators' allowances can be categorized into two types: regular and non-regular. Regular allowances are paid monthly alongside the basic salary, while non-regular allowances are paid as needed.
Examples of non-regular allowances include:
• Furniture and severance gratuities of N6,079,200 each, which are paid only once per term
• Vehicle allowance of N8,105,600, which is a loan that must be repaid before leaving office.
