Kano State Government cracks down on unrest, arraigning 632 suspects for vandalism and looting, while announcing plans for youth training programs and a special commission to investigate killings and destruction.

The Kano State Government has announced the arraignment of 632 suspects in connection with the vandalism of public facilities and looting during the ongoing hunger protests in the state.

According to Sanusi Dawakin Tofa, the governor's spokesman, the suspects were apprehended for damaging public assets in various parts of the city and were subsequently arraigned in court on Monday, August 5.

Tofa reiterated the state government's commitment to maintaining law and order, warning that those found guilty of vandalism would face severe legal consequences, emphasizing the government's zero-tolerance stance on destructive behavior.

The spokesman further revealed that the state government has plans to roll out comprehensive training programs for youths in various vocational skills, aimed at promoting self-sufficiency and reducing their susceptibility to being exploited for destructive purposes.

Additionally, Tofa announced the establishment of a special commission of inquiry to investigate the perpetrators behind the killings and destruction of public properties in the state, ensuring accountability for the recent unrest.

“The commission will ascertain the root causes of the killings and destruction of public buildings,” he said.

Tofa emphasized that the individuals seen carrying Russian flags during the protests were not associated with the state government, and he called on security agencies to investigate the source and intentions behind the display of these flags.

He distinguished between the legitimate protesters, who had formally submitted their grievances and demands to the government, and the flag-waving individuals. The genuine protesters' concerns, he noted, would be forwarded to President Bola Tinubu for consideration and appropriate action.
