Bangladesh PM Flees Amid Resignation
PM's sudden departure rocks Bangladesh...
Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina resigns and flees amid deadly protests, ending 20-year rule.
Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh's prime minister, has resigned and fled the country amid weeks of deadly anti- government protests.
Hasina, 76, fled Dhaka on Monday via military helicopter, joined by her sister, as demonstrators disregarded a curfew and converged on the prime minister's palace.
Protesters set vehicles ablaze near Hasina's residence, as overwhelmed police struggled to hold back the surging crowds marching towards the prime minister's neighborhood.
Thousands poured onto the streets of Dhaka, jubilant, following the announcement of Hasina's resignation.
She held the reins of power for two decades, serving a total of 20 years.
The escalating death toll has intensified demands for government accountability.
Sheikh Hasina secured a fourth consecutive term in office in January's election, which was boycotted by opposition parties, sparking concerns about the legitimacy of her victory.
