Trump Picks Young Senator as Running Mate

Trump wins Republican nomination, chooses Senator James D. Vance as running mate, and shifts focus to national unity after assassination attempt, despite ongoing legal battles and refusal to accept potential election loss.

The Republican Party formally nominated Donald Trump as its 2024 presidential candidate at the start of the party's national convention in Milwaukee on Monday, July 15. Trump selected 39-year-old United States (US) Senator James D. Vance as his running partner for vice president.

“As Vice President, J.D. will continue to fight for our Constitution, stand with our Troops, and will do everything he can to help me MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

The four-day conference took place at Milwaukee's Fiserv Forum and began two days after Trump narrowly escaped a Pennsylvania assassination attempt. It also came after Trump won a big legal battle when a federal judge threw out one of his criminal cases.

On Thursday, July 18, Trump is scheduled to deliver a primetime speech, officially accepting the party's nomination, ahead of the November 5 election, where he will face off against incumbent Democratic President Joe Biden.

The upcoming election is shaping up to be a tight rematch between the 78-year-old Republican candidate and President Biden, 81, with opinion polls suggesting a closely contested race between the two.

Despite lacking evidence, Trump continues to claim that his 2020 loss to Biden was due to widespread fraud, and has so far refused to commit to accepting the outcome of the upcoming election if it doesn't go in his favor.

After a recent attempt on his life, Trump has decided to revise his acceptance speech to shift the focus towards promoting national unity and putting aside partisan differences, rather than highlighting his disagreements with Biden.

“This is an opportunity to unite the entire country, even the world,” Trump declared.

“The speech will be very different, very different from what it would have been two days ago.”

Trump's right ear was slightly injured but not seriously by the assassination attempt bullet.

Trump stated that he thought the judge's decision to drop the papers case should also apply to his other ongoing prosecutions. He is now on trial in two instances pertaining to his attempts to have the 2020 election results overturned, one in a federal court in Georgia and the other in a federal court in Washington.

A US Supreme Court decision on July 1 that grants Trump immunity for many of his presidential acts may have an impact on both cases.

Trump is due to be jailed in New York in September for trying to hide a payment he made to porn star Stormy Daniels just before he won the 2016 election.

“This dismissal of the Florida Lawless Indictment should be just the beginning, quickly followed by the dismissal of ALL the Witch Hunts,” Trump said on Monday, July 15, on his Truth Social platform.

In addition, he brought up the prosecutions of several supporters who took part in the January 6, 2021, storming of the US Capitol.
