The Nigerian Governors' Forum (NGF) has commended the Supreme Court's ruling on local government autonomy, describing it as a positive development. The governors, led by Chairman Abdul Rahaman Abdul Razaq, welcomed the decision, stating that it relieves them of some burdens and allows local governments to manage their affairs. The NGF will meet next week to review the ruling and its implications in detail.

The Supreme Court's ruling on local government autonomy has been applauded by the Nigerian Governors' Forum (NGF), which described it as a positive development.

Governor of Kwara State and Forum Chairman Abdul Rahaman Abdul Razaq claimed that the 36 state governors applauded the supreme court's decision in a statement released by his chief press secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye.

The governor also revealed that the NGF will convene on Wednesday of the next week to examine all of the concerns in detail and then formulate a resolution.

The statement says, in part, “We welcome the ruling of the Supreme Court; compliance is a given. Our Attorney- Generals have applied for the enrollment order, which we'll study carefully.

“By and large, the Governors are happy with the devolution of power with respect to local government autonomy.

According to him, “It relieves the Governors of some burdens. People really don't know how much states expend in bailing out local governments. It's not going to affect the state; we've not tampered with local government funds.

“What the local governments have to do is to manage themselves, especially with the upcoming minimum wage. They have to manage their affairs and make sure salaries are paid and traditional rulers their five percent. Those are the main issues,” he said.
