President Bola Tinubu approves N70,000 minimum wage for Nigerian workers, promises review every three years. Labor leaders commend decision, pledge to work with private sector and sub-nationals. University unions' outstanding salaries to be resolved via executive powers.



President Bola Tinubu has approved a new minimum wage of N70,000 for Nigerian workers, with a promise to review the national minimum wage law every three years. This decision comes after a meeting between the President and the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday, July 18.


According to a statement released on X by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the President's endorsement of the new minimum wage follows a successful meeting with labor leaders. The review of the national minimum wage law every three years aims to ensure that workers' wages keep pace with the country's economic realities.


“President Bola Tinubu has approved N70,000 minimum wage for Nigerian workers with promise to review the national minimum wage law every three years.


“President Tinubu also promised to find ways to assist the private sector and the sub-nationals to pay the minimum wage.


“President Tinubu announced the decisions at the meeting held with leaders of TUC and NLC on Thursday in Abuja, the second time the parties met in 7 days,” the statement read.


Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, revealed that labor leaders expressed their gratitude for the President's “fatherly gestur” in approving the new minimum wage. Additionally, President Tinubu pledged to utilize his executive powers to resolve the outstanding salaries owed to university unions, totaling four months.


During the 2024 Democracy Day celebration, President Tinubu announced that a consensus had been reached between the Federal Government and organized labor on the long-debated new minimum wage. In his national broadcast commemorating Democracy Day in Abuja, the President revealed that an executive bill would soon be sent to the National Assembly to formalize the new minimum wage agreement, marking a significant step forward in the implementation of the new wage structure.
