Nigerian music legend Onyeka Onwenu passes away at 72, leaving behind a legacy in music, politics, and activism. Remembering her impact and achievements in various fields.



Onyeka Onwenu, affectionately known as the ‘Elegant Stallion,’ was a multifaceted personality who made her mark in various fields. She was a talented songwriter, actress, human rights activist, social activist, journalist, and politician, leaving an indelible legacy in each sphere.


Onwenu's foray into politics saw her contest for the chairmanship of Ideato North local government twice, although she didn't secure the position. However, her dedication to public service was recognized by former governor Ikedi Ohakim, who appointed her as the Chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture, a role she held with distinction.


Onyeka Onwenu's impressive career was further bolstered by her appointment as the Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the National Centre for Women Development by President Goodluck Jonathan, a testament to her leadership and advocacy skills.


As a legendary singer, Onwenu's impact on the music industry was immense, with millions of records sold worldwide. Her iconic hits, including “One Love,” “You and I,” “Ekwe,”Alleluya,” Bia Nulu,” and "Iyogogo", remain timeless classics. She also collaborated with fellow music legend Sunny Ade on the memorable duets “Wait For Me” and “Choices.” Her remarkable talent earned her numerous awards during her active recording years in the 80s and 90s.


As a talented actress, Onyeka Onwenu  showcased her versatility by winning the prestigious Africa Movie Academy Award (AMAA) for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her compelling performance in the movie “Women's Cot,” further solidifying her status as a creative force to be reckoned with.


Onyeka Onwenu, who cherished her privacy and kept her personal life out of the spotlight, leaves behind a legacy and a loving family, including her siblings and two beloved children, Tijani Charles and Abraham, who will deeply miss her presence in their lives.
