Kenya's President Ruto Axes Ministers Following Fatal Demonstrations
Deadly Protests Lead to Ministerial Shake-Up in Kenya
Ministers are sacked by President Ruto following Kenya's violent protests...
Kenyan President William Ruto sacks entire cabinet amid violent protests, announces plans for a broad-based government to address economic woes and corruption. Talks with political parties and sectors to begin soon.
In reaction to large anti-government protests, Kenyan President William Ruto announced on Thursday, July 11, the firing of practically his entire cabinet and the beginning of talks to build what he called a broad-based government.
He declared that all ministers, including the attorney general, would be impacted by the dismissals, with the exception of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, and Foreign Minister.
Ruto clarified that he made his decision after giving it considerable thought, paying close attention to the worries of the Kenyan people, and carefully evaluating the performance, accomplishments, and difficulties of his cabinet.
Following mostly nonviolent demonstrations organized by young Kenyans, a larger movement against Ruto and his administration has been launched. Unfortunately, some of these protests have turned violent and deadly.
In addition, Ruto declared that he would start wide-ranging talks with different political parties and sectors right once in order to form a broad-based government.
He said that this new administration will support him in putting into action ambitious plans to reduce the nation's heavy debt load, create more jobs, get rid of waste in government, and fight corruption.
Ruto announced measures to cut back on government spending earlier in July in response to the controversy over a financial law that would have raised taxes and sparked numerous violent protests.
After careful consideration of the public's concerns and ongoing debate about its provisions, he declared that he will not be signing the controversial bill into law.
The demonstrations in Kenya culminated in a unprecedented breach of the national assembly by protesters, resulting in a tragic loss of over 23 lives.
