Flooding, Logistics Issues Cause Fuel Shortages — NNPC
NNPC Identifies Flooding and Logistics Challenges as Culprits Behind Fuel Queues
NNPC explains fuel scarcity, cites flooding and logistical challenges, and promises swift resolution.
Fuel queues back due to flooding and logistical issues according to NNPC.
The fuel queues that have recently formed in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and other regions of the country have been attributed by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Ltd. to logistical issues that have been made worse by unfavorable weather and flooding.
Olufemi Soneye, Chief Corporate Communications Officer at NNPC Ltd., stated in a statement that a recent thunderstorm was the reason behind the disruption of the ship-to-ship (STS) transfer of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as gasoline, between mother vessels and daughter vessels.
The bad weather has also interfered with truck load-outs, product transit to filling stations, and berthing at jetties, which has disrupted the supply chain.
Soneye emphasized that it is forbidden to fill gasoline during rainstorms and lightning strikes because petroleum products are flammable and in accordance with NIMET standards.
He stated that in order to prevent possible risks to trucks, filling stations, and human life, compliance with these standards is essential.
Flooding on truck routes has made matters worse and made it more difficult for PMS to get from coastal locations to Abuja.
NNPC Ltd. is currently working with pertinent parties to resolve these logistical issues and guarantee a consistent supply of fuel to the impacted locations.
“Loading has already commenced in regions where these issues have lessened, and we expect the situation to improve in the coming days, with full normalcy restored soon,” Soneye stated.
The NNPC has informed the public that efforts are being made to restore a smooth fuel supply and has advised drivers to abstain from panic buying and stockpiling petroleum products.
