Copa America: US Soccer Looks to Future After Early Tournament Exit
US Coach Confident in 2026 World Cup Chances Despite Setback
US coach Gregg Berhalter remains confident in his ability to lead the team to the 2026 World Cup despite their early exit from the Copa America. The US was eliminated after losing to Uruguay 1-0 and finishing third in Group C, with only the top two teams advancing.
Berhalter expressed disappointment in the team's performance, saying, “We're extremely disheartened by the results. We know we have more potential, but we didn't show it in this tournament.” When asked if he still believes he's the right person for the job, he replied, “Yes.”
Uruguay won all three group matches, including the decisive goal against the US, courtesy of Mathias Olivera. Berhalter acknowledged the need for improvement, saying, “We had a subpar performance and need to get better. We can't stay still; we have to keep moving forward.”
US Soccer sporting director Matt Crocker echoed Berhalter's sentiments, stating that the team's performance “fell short of our expectations” and that they “must do better.” Crocker announced a comprehensive review of the team's performance to identify areas for improvement ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Uruguay will face the second-placed team in Group D in the quarterfinals, while Panama, who defeated Bolivia 3-1, will play the winner of Group D. The final group match between Colombia and Brazil will determine the top spot in Group D, with Colombia currently leading with six points and Brazil trailing with four points.
Mathias Olivera won man of the match.
