Uruguay triumphed over Brazil in a penalty shootout, 4-2, after a fiercely contested 0-0 draw at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, advancing to the Copa America semifinals. Douglas Luiz hit the post, Eder Militao's attempt was saved, and Manuel Ugarte scored the decisive penalty kick, securing Uruguay's spot in the next round.
The match was marked by few scoring opportunities during regular time, and Uruguay finished with 10 men after Nahitan Nandez was sent off. Despite this, they persevered and will face Colombia on Wednesday at 1:00 BST in Charlotte, North Carolina. Colombia had earlier defeated Panama 5-0.
Uruguayan goalkeeper Sergio Rochet praised his team's resilience, saying, “We lost a player in the final minutes of a very tough opponent match, making for an extremely tense match. But despite our youth, we showed grit... This group deserves a lot of happiness. The country deserves it. We are very excited, so we are going for more.”
Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez had Uruguay's best chance, heading just over the crossbar from close range. Shortly after, Rochet denied Raphinha following a swift Brazilian counterattack. Nandez's yellow card was upgraded to a red after a video assistant referee review for a violent tackle on Rodrygo in the 74th minute. Uruguay defended fiercely for the remaining 90 minutes, forcing extra time and eventually penalties.
In the other quarterfinal, James Rodriguez scored and assisted on two goals as Colombia dominated Panama 5-0 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. Jhon Cordoba headed in James' corner to give Colombia an early lead, before James converted a penalty. Just before halftime, Luis Diaz lobbed in James' quick free-kick. Richard Rios scored from long range, and Miguel Borja added a penalty to complete Colombia's convincing performance.
Sergio Rochet was named man of the match.
