A final-year student at Delta State University, Nelson Eserada, has been arrested for staging his own kidnapping and demanding a ransom of N50 million from his father. The Delta State Police Command apprehended the young man after his father reported the incident to the Abraka division.
According to the police spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, Nelson's father was frantic when he reported the abduction, claiming the kidnappers were demanding N50 million in Bitcoin as ransom. The father also shared a disturbing video sent by the alleged abductors, showing Nelson tied up and being tortured. However, investigations revealed that Nelson had orchestrated the entire ordeal himself.
“The DPO Abraka SP Fabian Ayameh swiftly moved into action, embarked on a technical intelligence-led investigation and on 10/06/2024 at about 2000hrs, one Jerry Lawrence 'M' of Jeddo Community Warri was arrested in connection with the crime.”
Furthermore, the State Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, emphasized the importance of proper parenting, urging parents to take responsibility for their children's upbringing and well-being. He cautioned that neglecting this duty could lead to children becoming a burden to their families in the future. Additionally, he advised young people to shun the get-rich-quick mentality, stressing that criminal behavior only leads to negative consequences and that hard work and determination are the keys to success.
“A preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect conspired with Nelson Eserada, a 400-level student in the Banking & Finance Department of Delta State University, Abraka. It was also uncovered that the father had already paid a ransom of five million and two hundred thousand naira through a Bitcoin account belonging to the principal suspect, Jerry Lawrence.
“The suspects are currently in custody, and the investigation is ongoing,” Edafe said.
