Deposed Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, awarded N10m damages by Federal High Court for violation of fundamental rights. Meanwhile, Kano State Police Command bans durbar activities amidst power struggle between Bayero and reinstated Emir, Lamido Sanusi.

On Friday, June 14, the Federal High Court in Kano State awarded N10 million in damages to the deposed Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, for the violation of his fundamental rights, personal liberty, and freedom of movement. In his ruling, Justice Simon Amobeda declared that the Kano state governor's order for Bayero's arrest was unjustified and lacked a lawful basis.

In a separate development, the Kano State Police Command announced a ban on all durbar activities across the state, effective Thursday, June 13, ahead of the Eid-el-Kabir festivities. This decision was made public in a statement by the state Police Public Relations Officer, Haruna Abdullahi, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Usaini Gumel.

The ban on durbar activities follows a crisis sparked by the repeal of the Kano Emirate Council Law 2019 by the state Assembly, which led to the dethronement of the five emirs installed in 2020 by former governor Abdullahi Ganduje. The Assembly replaced the Kano Emirate Council Law 2019 with a 2024 version, consolidating the five emirates back into one, and facilitating the reinstatement of Lamido Sanusi as the 16th Emir of Kano, replacing Ado Bayero, the 15th Emir.

Although Lamido Sanusi has been officially recognized as the new Emir and resides in the main palace, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero continues to assert his claim to the throne and has taken up residence in a mini palace in Nassarawa.

On Tuesday, June 11, Bayero extended an invitation to district heads to join him at the Gidan Nassarawa palace for the Sallah Durbar celebrations in the state. Through a circular issued by his senior counselor and the Galadiman Kano, Abbas Sanusi, Bayero assured the district heads that he had received confirmation of police protection for the durbar. An aide to the council confirmed that the police had received the letter detailing the planned durbar and had acknowledged its receipt.

However, the Commissioner of Police, Usaini Gumel, contradicted Bayero's claim, stating that the police did not receive any letter or notification from him regarding the planned durbar at the Gidan Nassarawa palace. This denial came despite an aide to the council confirming that the police had been served with the letter and had acknowledged its receipt.
