Real Madrid Rejects FIFA Club World Cup Participation Over Prize Money Dispute
Real Madrid is boycotting the FIFA Club World Cup because of the “small” prize money.
Real Madrid's manager, Carlo Ancelotti, said that the club will not participate in the FIFA World Club Cup because of the competition's prize money.
The 36-time La Liga winners Real Madrid have stated that they will not be attending the FIFA World Club Cup, citing their displeasure with the competition's prize money, according to manager Carlo Ancelotti.
Declaring, “Real Madrid will not go to the FIFA World Club,” Ancelotti was blunt in his remark. We, along with other clubs, will decline the invitation.
The Italian strategist went into more detail about the team's position, emphasizing the huge financial difference between the tournament prize money and the amount of money made from a single Real Madrid game.
“Just one single Real Madrid match is worth €20 million, and they want to give us that money for the whole competition... no way. Negative,” Ancelotti told Il Giornale.
The competition is held over two weeks with a simple knockout format. The Oceania champions and the champions of the host country square off in a playoff. The winner of this game advances to the quarterfinals with the winners from North America, Asia, and Africa. At the semi-final stage of the competition, the South American and European champions are added.
Real Madrid holds the record for most championships, having won five times. With eight trophy victories, Spanish clubs have been especially successful, with four coming from English clubs. Manchester City, the current champions, trounced Fluminense 4-0 in the 2023 championship match.
The tournament is scheduled to occur in 2025.
