President Biden Draws Line: No Pardon for Son Hunter if Convicted
Hunter won't get a pardon if proven guilty, according to Biden, whose son is accused of using a firearm and narcotics.
On Thursday, June 6, US President Joe Biden declared that if his son Hunter Biden is found guilty of federal criminal firearms charges, he will not be granted a pardon.
In response to a question about whether he would rule out pardoning Hunter Biden, the president said, “Yes.”
In addition, Biden reaffirmed his willingness to accept the verdict of the trial, which is presently taking place in Delaware, his home state.
It is alleged that Hunter violated federal law by obtaining and carrying a handgun without authorization and consuming drugs.
He entered a not guilty plea to all three charges in spite of the accusations.
He has, nevertheless, been open about his struggles with alcoholism and crack cocaine addiction.
David Weiss, the special counsel, brought these charges.
The Biden family has found the trial especially challenging because of Hunter Biden's battle with drug addiction after his brother Beau passed away.
Hunter's stepmother, First Lady Jill Biden, was present at the hearing prior to her husband's departure for commemoration D-Day ceremonies in France.
It had previously been announced by the White House that President Biden would not pardon his son.
Press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre declared in December, “I've been very clear; the president is not going to pardon his son.”
The child of a serving president is being tried for the first time in US history.
In the past, President Biden has publicly discussed his son's path to addiction rehabilitation and offered his support.
As the trial began starting on Monday, the president made a statement, “I am the president, but i am also a dad. jill and i love our son, and we are so proud of the man he is today.”
“Hunter's resilience in the face of adversity and the strength he has brought to his recovery are inspiring to us. a lot of families have loved ones who have overcome addiction and know what we mean,” he went on.
“As the president, i don't and won't comment on pending federal cases, but as a dad, i have boundless love for my son, confidence in him, and respect for his strength. our family has been through a lot together, and jill and i are going to continue to be there for hunter and our family with our love and support.”
The trial comes after former President Donald Trump was found guilty on 34 counts by a jury in New York. These counts deal with creating false business records to try and hide payments made to a porn star in exchange for hush money.
