Ohanaeze Youths Back INEC, Reject Protest
Youth of Ohanaeze Dismiss Protest Against INEC
Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide condemns planned protest against INEC and its chairman, Professor Yakubu Mahmood. The group urges politicians to accept election outcome and Supreme Court verdict, and embrace President Bola Tinubu's administration.
A planned demonstration against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and its chairman, Professor Yakubu Mahmood, has been condemned by the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide.
The South Unity Youth Coalition, citing a tainted electoral process under Professor Yakubu's leadership, had declared a large-scale demonstration planned for June 12, Nigeria's Democracy Day.
The national president of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike, criticized the increasing discontent surrounding the 2023 elections in a statement released on Monday, June 10, 2024.
Concerned about what, Nnabuike said, “Instead, what we have continued to see is that politicians and some of their paid agents have continued to fan embers of discord in the country owing to the outcome of the elections.
“We have said for the umpteenth time, that there is no perfect election anywhere in the world.
“Our appeal to our brother, His Excellency Mr. Peter Obi, is to accept not just the outcome of the election, but the verdict of the apex court in the land, the Supreme Court.
“In the case of the 2023 election, without sounding biased, it is a wrong conclusion for anyone to say that the INEC performed woefully. This cannot be so, when the court upheld the majority of the elections, and in some of the cases where elections were annulled, it had to do with candidates' qualifications and some other issues that could not be blamed on the INEC,” Nnabuike said.
He asked politicians to embrace President Bola Tinubu's administration and accept the outcome of the election, especially the presidential candidate of the Labour Party for 2023.
He emphasized that rather than stoking strife among Nigerians, the country's residents ought to come together and move forward.
The youth leader emphasized that most election results have been accepted by the courts while acknowledging the flaws in elections across the globe and defending INEC's performance.
He went on to say that the National Assembly's electoral changes and Tinubu's administration have the council's support.
Igbo youths will not tolerate acts that destabilize the nation, Nnabuike warned, calling for an end to protests.
