NFVCB Cracks Down on Uncensored Online Content: Sketch Creators Face Detention for Unapproved Uploads. The National Film and Video Censors Board warns filmmakers and content providers to stop sharing unapproved content on social media, citing a growing concern over uncensored content and same-sex relationships, which are prohibited in Nigeria.
The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) has announced that it will detain sketch creators who upload content online without its approval. In a statement, the board warned that it will take action against creators who post content without permission, citing a growing concern over the spread of uncensored content.
The board, led by Shaibu Husseini, issued an immediate warning to filmmakers and content providers to stop producing and sharing illegal and unapproved content on social media platforms. It condemned the creation and sharing of same-sex content on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter, stating that it is prohibited in Nigeria.
According to the NFVCB, all film and video content, including skits and music videos, must be classified by the board before being distributed or shown on any platform. The board reminded creators and filmmakers that it is illegal to publicly display same-sex relationships in Nigeria, citing the 2014 Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act.
The NFVCB reiterated that it is an offense to distribute or exhibit any film or video content without its classification. The board warned content creators that it will work with security agencies to find and prosecute those who break the rules. It declared that publicly exhibiting same-sex relationships in Nigeria is illegal.
The board especially denounced the creation and sharing of same-sex content on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter, stating that it is prohibited in Nigeria.
Film and video content, including skits and music videos, must legally be classified by the NFVCB before being distributed or shown on any platform, according to the body in charge of censoring and classifying movies and videos in Nigeria.
The board reminded content creators and filmmakers that it is illegal to directly or indirectly make public displays (exhibitions) of same-sex relationships in Nigeria, citing the 2014 Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act.
“It is also an offence to distribute or exhibit any film or video content including skits and musical videos on any platform without recourse to the National Film and Video Censors Board for classification,” the statement reiterated.
The NFVCB issued a warning to content creators, stating that it would be working with security agencies to find and prosecute anyone who were breaking the rules.
He stated, “The board declared that it is illegal to directly or indirectly make an exhibition of a same-sex relationship in public in Nigeria.”
