MultiChoice to Appeal N150m Fine, Rejects Tribunal's Verdict

MultiChoice plans to challenge the tribunal's N150 million fine

MultiChoice Nigeria to appeal N150m fine and tribunal's order to provide free subscriptions, citing lack of jurisdiction and disputing ruling on price increase.

MultiChoice Nigeria is appealing the CCPT's decision to fine it N150 million and order free subscriptions, citing a lack of jurisdiction.

The tribunal's ruling followed MultiChoice's announcement of price increases for DStv and GOtv packages, which the tribunal prevented from taking effect.

MultiChoice disputed the tribunal's ruling, arguing it lacked jurisdiction, but was fined for disobeying the order.

The company is appealing the decision and will not comment further as the matter is before the courts.

MultiChoice is seeking to overturn the tribunal's ruling and fine, citing a lack of jurisdiction and disputing the price increase ruling.

MultiChoice issued a statement expressing its disagreement with the tribunal's decision on the order.

It said: “MultiChoice Nigeria is aware of the recent ruling by the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal (CCPT) regarding its jurisdiction to entertain a price regulation matter.

“We disagree with the ruling, and will therefore file an appeal against said ruling.”

MultiChoice said that because the case is presently being considered by the courts, it will not be commenting more.
