The vice president of Malawi, Saulos Chilima, along with nine other people were on a military plane when it disappeared.
According to authorities, a search is in progress.
The Malawi Defence Force Aircraft vanished from sight on Monday after departing Lilongwe, the country's capital.
Chilima was traveling to Mzuzu with the intention of connecting to Nkhata Bay to attend the funeral of the late Minister of Justice Ralph Kasambala.
