Euro 2024: Switzerland Stun Italy, Advance to Quarter-Finals

Italy Exit Euro 2024 with a Fizzle, Switzerland Impress

Switzerland defeats Italy 2-0 in Euro 2024, ending Italy's reign as European champions. Ruben Vargas scores twice, setting up a potential quarter-final match against England. Switzerland's impressive display sends them to Dusseldorf, while Italy exits the tournament with a whimper.

Italy's reign as European champions came to an underwhelming end as Switzerland produced a scintillating display to secure a 2-0 victory. The Swiss dominated from the outset, with Ruben Vargas delivering an impressive performance. He set up Remo Freuler for the opening goal, a powerful low shot that beat Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Vargas doubled Switzerland's lead just 27 seconds into the second half, expertly curling the ball into the top corner from the left side of the Italy penalty area. Michel Aebischer provided the assist, and Vargas's goal showcased his skill and precision.

Italy struggled to create meaningful chances, failing to register a shot on target until the 73rd minute. Their best opportunity before then came when Fabian Schar, a Swiss defender, headed Nicolo Fagioli's cross against his own post, with Yann Sommer stranded. Gianluca Scamacca also hit the woodwork late on, but Italy never seriously threatened a comeback.

The Azzurri's forgettable Euro 2024 campaign fizzled out with a whimper, as Switzerland's impressive display set them up for a potential quarter-final showdown with England. Italy's limp exit marked a disappointing end to their reign as European champions.

As Italy departs the tournament, Switzerland, fueled by their energetic and vibrant fans in Berlin, advances to Dusseldorf, where they will face the victor of the England-Slovakia match on Saturday, July 6th at 17:00 BST.

Ruben Vargas won man of the match.
