Ex-CBN director Emefiele printed his own naira design instead of following Buhari's design

Ex-CBN Governor Emefiele Accused of Defying Buhari's Naira Design: Former Director reveals Emefiele printed his own design, differing from President's approved version, amidst EFCC charges and court orders for asset forfeiture.

Godwin Emefiele, the former governor of the top bank, printed his own design of the naira, according to a former Director of Currency Operations at the Central Bank of Nigeria, or CBN, Ahmed Umar.

During his testimony at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Maitama, Abuja, Umar disclosed this information.

The characteristics that Emefiele requested to be printed were different from those in the design that former President Muhammadu Buhari approved, according to the former director of CBN.

Umar said, “The design approved by the President had a QR code, which the currency in circulation does not. The positioning of the portrait was on the right side, that printed by the CBN was on the left and the number scheme approved by the President is different from what the CBN produced.”

Emefiele was charged with four offenses by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on May 15 before FCT High Court Judge Maryanne Anenih.

However, Emefiele refuted the accusations and was given N300 million in bail.

A Federal High Court in Lagos has mandated once more the temporary confiscation of $1.4 million connected to the former Emefiele governor.

The money was ordered to be forfeited to the federal government by the court.
