The United States Soccer Federation has condemned the online racist abuse directed at several of its players after a 2-1 loss to Panama in the Copa America. The targeted players include Folarin Balogun, Chris Richards, Timothy Weah, and Weston McKennie.
Timothy Weah, who was shown a straight red card in the 18th minute for punching Panama's Roderick Miller, apologized to his teammates for the incident, calling it a “moment of frustration.”
US Soccer released a statement denouncing the racist abuse, saying, “There is absolutely no place in the game for such hateful and discriminatory behavior.”
Despite Panama's numerical advantage, the US took the lead at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium through a stunning strike from Folarin Balogun, his fifth goal in 14 appearances for the US. However, the lead was short-lived, as Cesar Blackman equalized for Panama just four minutes later.
The US defended admirably, but Panama's pressure eventually paid off, with Jose Fajardo scoring from close range seven minutes from time. Shortly before full-time, Panama's Adalberto Carrasquilla was also shown a red card for a reckless swipe on Christian Pulisic.
The US, who co-host the 2026 men's World Cup with Canada and Mexico, are now level on points with Panama heading into their final group match against Uruguay on July 2. To progress to the last 16, the US need to match Panama's result against Bolivia, thanks to their better goal difference.
Florian Balogun won man of match.
