Brazil's quest to reach a third consecutive Copa America final got off to a disappointing start as they were held to a 0-0 draw by Costa Rica. After struggling in their previous warm-up match against the USA, Brazil needed to show hunger and determination in their opening Copa America match.
As the clear favorites in Group D, Brazil was expected to secure three points against Costa Rica, whom they had not lost to in their previous nine meetings. However, Brazil took their time to get going, controlling possession but failing to make significant progress. Despite a few half-chances and a potential penalty call in the 22nd minute, Brazil's deliberate passing and buildup kept the ball largely in their own half without truly testing Sequeira.
The first breakthrough came in the 31st minute when Raphinha's free kick led to Marquinhos almost scoring at the back post, but the goal was ultimately ruled offside after a prolonged review procedure.
