Biden's Spot in Jeopardy: Dems Weigh Replacement
Biden's Fate Uncertain as Dems Explore Alternative Candidates
Democratic party considers replacing Joe Biden as nominee after debate performance raises concerns about his ability to win presidency.
The Democratic party is reportedly exploring the possibility of replacing President Joe Biden as its presumptive nominee ahead of the national convention in August. This consideration comes after Biden's debate performance against former President Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, on Friday, June 28.
During the debate, Biden's speech was occasionally slurred and throaty, with moments of incoherence and stuttering, resulting in responses that appeared weak. Trump even publicly questioned Biden's clarity, saying, “I really don't understand what he said at the end of that sentence. I don't think he knows what he said either,” during a discussion on border closure and immigration.
Post-debate analysis revealed that Biden's performance had raised concerns among panelists, with some agreeing that he hadn't helped his chances. Others noted his vulnerability, marked by a shaky voice, which sparked worries among Democrats that keeping him as the nominee could hurt their chances of winning the presidency.
Biden, 81, and Trump, 78, engaged in intense exchanges on various topics, including the Russia-Ukraine war, Israel's actions in Gaza, veterans' treatment, abortion, taxes, Medicare, inflation, Afghanistan, and America's global standing. Throughout the debate, Trump consistently put Biden on the defensive. Notably, Trump, who served as US president from 2017 to 2021, contested the outcome of the 2020 election against Biden in an unprecedented manner after his defeat.
His supporters notoriously breached the US Capitol building on January 6, 2021, as Trump persisted in claiming that the election had been fraudulently taken from him.
