Why Peter Obi traveled to Abure, Tanko, the spokesperson

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Labour Party, confirmed through his campaign team that, in contrast to some media accounts, his recent visit to the party's office in Abuja was intended for reconciliation rather for endorsement.

Yunusa Tanko, the campaign spokesperson for Obi, provided this explanation in a statement released in Abuja on Wednesday.

The media had extensively covered the former Anambra governor's and his supporters' Tuesday visit to the Labour Party leadership at the national secretariat.

The visit was portrayed in some media as a support of the National Working Committee (NWC) members and the existing party leadership, particularly following a divisive national convention that resulted in their reelection.

Tanko denied these allegations, stating that the purpose of the tour was to promote party unity.

“Obi's visit to Labour Party headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday was a reconciliatory move not to endorse any group interest in the party,” Tanko stated.

He restated that Obi's main goals were to bring the party together and make sure that every member felt welcomed and supported.

Tanko added that Obi was using the visit as a springboard for a larger consultation campaign aimed at bringing unity to the Labour Party.

As part of his ongoing efforts to bring the party together, Obi met on Wednesday with the political wings of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

“Obi's visit to Labour Party headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday was a reconciliatory move not to endorse any group interest in the party.

“Obi had repeatedly maintained that his Interest was to carry everybody along into one strong family and not to endorse anyone's interests.

“The visit was part of the consultations Obi has been embarking on in search of peace in the party. In line with this, he also met with the political arm of the NLC and TUC on Wednesday in continuation of his search for peace in the party.

“At his meeting with the workers' union, the leadership of the NLC/TUC political commission led by comrade Titus Amba and comrade Chris Uyot was also disposed to peace in the party.

“He clearly made the point that the party needed to reconcile all its various positions in a peaceful atmosphere to have a united house that should be all-inclusive.

“He thanked the leadership of the political commission for their understanding and expressed hope for a good working relationship very shortly.

“The LP standard bearer also plans to meet with other critical stakeholders like the Obidient to have an all-inclusive political family with a common dream of rescuing Nigeria.”
