UCL: Joselu's Late Heroics Send Real Madrid to Champions League Final
Joselu's late goals propel Real Madrid to their eighteenth Champions League final
Real Madrid defeated Bayern Munich 2-1 in the second leg of their Champions League semifinal match on Wednesday, overcoming the odds to go to their sixth Champions League final in ten years thanks to two goals from Joselu in the closing minutes.
Alphonso Davies, who had been spotted by England captain Harry Kane with a stunning ball, looked to be leading Bayern to victory when he cut in and blasted past Andriy Lunin.
However, Joselu equalized the score in the 88th minute when he reacted first to a mistake made by Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who had been outstanding until that point.
Real Madrid managed to win 4-3 on aggregate after the video assistant referee (VAR) decided that Joselu was onside after the goal had originally been awarded as offside. This led to spectacular celebratory scenes at the Bernabeu.
The 14-time European champions Real Madrid will take on Dortmund at Wembley on Saturday, June 1.
Real Madrid faced a familiar scenario, echoing their thrilling semifinal comeback against Manchester City two years prior. However, this time, it was Bayern Munich who took the lead, courtesy of a lightning-fast counterattack finished by substitute Alphonso Davies in the 68th minute, putting Real Madrid on the brink of defeat.
Joselu, a substitute, emerged as the hero, capitalizing on a disastrous mistake by Manuel Neuer in the 88th minute to equalize. Just two minutes later, he scored again, this time with a fortunate deflection from Antonio Rüdiger's cross, securing a stunning turnaround and sending the Real Madrid faithful into raptures.
