Road Collapse In China killed 19 People, Injured Hundreds More
A piece of a roadway collapsed in southern Guangdong province, China, killing at least 19 people
The tragedy occurred between Meizhou City and Dabu County, with the road collapsing about 2:10 a.m., trapping 18 vehicles and involving 49 people.
Photos posted on social media showed the heartbreaking scene of devastation, with a burning pile of damaged vehicles lying in a deep muddy pit where the once-busy highway lay.
In response, authorities quickly summoned roughly 500 workers from several agencies, including public security, emergency response, firefighting, and mining rescue, to assist with the ongoing rescue operations.
While the specific cause of the highway collapse is still being investigated, recent severe weather, including torrential rains and devastating floods, has afflicted the region, raising concerns about infrastructural stability.
This tragedy adds to a litany of catastrophic disasters that have struck Guangdong in recent weeks, including a tornado that killed five people in Guangzhou.
Furthermore, China's vast highway network, which spans a variety of terrains and climates, has inherent dangers, adding to a higher frequency of road accidents.
Despite efforts to improve safety standards, catastrophic accidents continue, including as the bus crash in Shanxi province that lost 14 lives in March and the vehicle pile-up in Hunan province that killed 16 people last year.
As investigations into the reason of the collapse continue, authorities have stopped a portion of the S12 highway in both directions, advising drivers to seek alternate routes for their safety.
This catastrophe serves as a somber reminder of the crucial need of strong safety measures and careful infrastructure maintenance in preventing similar tragedies in the future.
