President Tinubu welcomes Senegal's President Bassirou Diomaye Faye at Aso Rock Villa
Bassirou Faye, the president of Senegal, is received by Tinubu at Aso Rock
Bassirou Faye, the president of Senegal, was met by President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday, May 16, at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja.
President Faye's first official visit to Nigeria since taking office in April began with his arrival at the Presidential Villa in the late afternoon, where he was warmly welcomed at the forecourt.
Following his victory in a postponed presidential election, in which he garnered more than half of the total votes cast, the 44-year-old became Senegal's youngest president ever.
President Tinubu was present at Faye's inauguration.
As the head of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, Tinubu made his first visit to the nation since taking office, at the government of Senegal's invitation.
Yusuf Tuggar, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, along with other high-ranking government officials accompanied the President on the visit.
Recall that Faye assumed office as the new president of Senegal on Tuesday, April 2, having previously served time in prison.
As part of a political amnesty declared by departing President Macky Sall, he was released together with well-known opposition politician Ousmane Sonko.
Faye's election victory represented his inaugural experience in elected office.
Senegal's standing as a stable democracy in West Africa—a region frequently tainted by coups and political turmoil—was put to the test during the election.
The pre-election unrest was sparked by concerns over the arrests of Sonko and Faye in the previous year, as well as worries that President Sall might try to bypass constitutional term limits and cling to power.
