‘I Remain Committed To Improving Welfare Of All Workers’ — Tinubu Addresses Nigerians On May Day

PRESIDENT Bola Tinubu has pledged to improve the quality of life and workplace conditions for all Nigerian workers. He underlined that individuals in charge of the nation's operations should be compensated fairly and have better living conditions.

Bola Tinubu delivered this assurance in his first May Day message to workers across the country.

Ajuri Ngelale, the President's Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, conveyed the President's greeting in a statement issued on Wednesday, May 1, titled 'President Tinubu Extends May Day Greetings to Nigerian Workers.'

According to Ngelale, the President emphasized that his administration is still committed to enhancing the welfare of all workers, citing several relief programmes such as the salary award and the next minimum wage review.

The statement read: “President Tinubu strongly believes that the custodians of the nation's machinery deserve a fair wage and enhanced welfare and that a labourer is deserving of not just any reward but fair and commensurate wages.

“The President assures Nigerian workers of his dedication to not only improving their welfare but also enhancing their working conditions and providing the necessary tools for them to succeed.”

His statements come at a time when the economy is under enormous duress, owing to the consequences of his government's rigorous economic reforms.

Tinubu launched the removal of petrol subsidies after taking office on May 29, 2023, a measure approved by the previous administration led by Muhammadu Buhari.

He stated that this decision will allow the government to dedicate cash for substantial infrastructure projects.

Furthermore, Tinubu implemented initiatives to normalize foreign exchange rates in order to reduce currency speculation and other forms of forex malpractice.

However, these moves caused secondary instability in the Naira's value, worsening Nigerians' problems as food prices increased.

On Sunday, April 28, Tinubu spoke at a high-level panel discussion at the World Economic Forum Special Meeting in Saudi Arabia, defending the elimination of petrol subsidies as a vital measure to keep Nigeria from going bankrupt and to reset the economy towards growth.

On May Day, President Tinubu expressed his devotion for Nigerian workers, recognizing their persistent devotion to the nation's peace, advancement, and prosperity. He praised their unwavering commitment and patriotic attitude, which fuels the country's progress.

Tinubu thanked workers from various sectors, including clerical staff who ensure efficient documentation and information distribution, security personnel who remain vigilant regardless of the circumstances, educators who shape the future by imparting knowledge, healthcare professionals who work tirelessly to save lives, and all Nigerian workers who contribute to the country's vitality and growth.
