FG delays the 555-member boards of tertiary institutions' inauguration
The postponement of the retreat and inauguration for pro-chancellors, chairmen, and members of the Governing Councils of federal tertiary institutions has been made public by the Federal Ministry of Education.
Thursday, May 30, and Friday, May 31, 2024 were the original dates for the inauguration.
A statement issued on Sunday, May 26, under the signature of Folasade Biriowo, the ministry's director of press, announced the postponement.
Biriowo claimed that the delay was necessary to guarantee that the list was thoroughly reviewed in accordance with the Presidency's instructions.
“This is as a result of the presidential directive, as conveyed by the State House press release dated May 23, 2024, for a comprehensive review of the membership of the governing councils of federal tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
“We regret any inconveniences this may cause.
“Further updates will be communicated in due course,” the statement by Biriowo read.
Remember that President Bola Tinubu ordered an extensive examination of the freshly declared governing bodies for the universities in Nigeria.
This order comes before the nominees' scheduled inauguration and retreat.
President Tinubu has directed a comprehensive review of governing boards of tertiary institutions, according to a statement released by the State House and signed by Special Advisor to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
Onanuga asserts that the appointments did not accurately represent the federal nature of the nation, with disparities such as certain states having more than one appointee while others only received one.
A list created by the Ministry of Education has previously been used to approve the appointment of 555 people to the positions of Pro-Chancellors/Chairmen and members of the Governing Boards for 111 federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.
Significant public outcry, including demonstrations by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), preceded the request for a review.
