ENCOUNTERING Wolverhampton Wanderers in the English Premier League (EPL) at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, Manchester City thrashed them 5-1 thanks to four goals from Erling Haaland.

The EPL reigning champions persisted in their pursuit of the championship, and Haaland helped them along with two goals apiece in the first and second halves, as the Citizens thumped managerless Wolves.

Hwang Hee-Chan gave City a brief lead before Julian Alvarez scored the game's winning goal.

Just past the half-hour mark, Haaland doubled his team's lead with a powerful header after opening the scoring from the penalty spot in the 12th minute.

Later in the first half, the Norwegian international scored his second spot-kick of the day to complete his hat trick. At the half, Man City led 3-0 as he placed his kick in the same way as the first.

Haaland leads the EPL scorers chart with 25 goals, and this hattrick is his ninth in less than two seasons with the team.

Nine minutes into the second half, Hee-Chan scored from a mistake by Ederson Moraes, but two minutes later, Haaland scored his fourth goal with a tremendous rising shot to give the team a three-goal advantage again.

Alvarez completed the five-star Man City performance late on when he was put through on goal and finished in the bottom far corner.

With 35 games played and 82 points overall, Pep Guardiola's team is only one point behind leaders Arsenal, who thrashed Bournemouth 3-0 earlier in the day despite having played one extra game.

In other news, Newcastle United beat Burnley 4-1 to increase their chances of qualifying for Europe while sending the Clarets into danger of relegation.

Nottingham Forest increased their chances of surviving by defeating Sheffield United 3-1 on the road.
